Activity at Soufrière Hills volcano on the island of Montserrat has been increasing over the past week or so, with elevated seismicity and some mild eruptive activity and pyroclastic flows. The latest news from the Montserrat Volcano Observatory* is that a partial dome collapse has taken place. The collapse took place overnight 28/29 July and involved the western side of the dome. The ash plume generated reached 12km altitude and pyroclastic flows from the collapse reached Plymouth and the sea, which means they covered around 5km distance as the Caribbean crow flies. More detail and commentary at Eruptions.

* Excellent detailed reports and information, but an eyesore of a website.
