The Volcanism Blog: back next week 25 May 2011

It’s been far too long. A heartfelt thank you to everyone for your kind and supportive comments following my bereavement, both here on the blog and in personal messages.

The Volcanism Blog will re-open next week, on Thursday 2 June 2011. Some would take this opportunity for a big relaunch with everything redesigned, fancy graphics and lots of new bells and whistles. Don’t worry, though, that is not going to happen here. Just a return, at last, to something like normal.

And perhaps the current eruption of Grímsvötn (justly described as ‘a doozy‘ by Erik Klemetti; more brilliant coverage from Eruptions here) will keep going into next week, and bring us the Return of the Monster Icelandic Ash Cloud Horror that the media, particularly in Britain, is obviously longing for. We’ll see.

Not extinct! 20 August 2010

The Volcanism Blog is not extinct, but I apologize for its presently dormant condition. Many people have been in touch to ask what’s happening, and in particular to enquire about my mother’s health (thank you) and I’m happy to say that, while she is still unwell and her condition has its ups and downs, treatment is progressing, she is much improved and the prognosis is good.

Other things have happened, however, which don’t need to be gone into here but which have got in the way of my involvement in many good things, including this blog. But this will not be the case for ever, and this blog will be back to normal as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.

Back to blogging 23 June 2010

My mother is still very unwell, but very much better than she has been; there is at least one more operation to come, but in the longer term the outlook is very good. Thank you to everyone who has been in touch, through comments here or directly, with good wishes during my mother’s illness. It really has helped so much to know that so many people – most of whom I do not know, and who know me only through this blog – have been keeping my mother, my family and myself in their thoughts and prayers. Thank you all.

So, slowly, I’m getting back to blogging. As it happens, The Volcanism Blog passed 1 million visitors at some point earlier this month – I don’t know exactly when it happened, but it’s a nice milestone to have passed. Thank you to everyone for visiting and reading, and for being patient and understanding during recent weeks.

Personal matters (updated) 7 May 2010

My mother has been taken into hospital at short notice, so family matters are taking up a lot of my time right now and the blog will have to take a back seat for a little while. I’ll catch up with things here when I can.

UPDATE, 23 May 2010. A sincere thank you to everyone who has added their good wishes to the comment thread below, and/or has contacted me directly by e-mail to wish me and the family well. I am very touched and very grateful. Mum has been in and out of hospital over the past fortnight, but is back home now; it’s not over yet, she will need more medical attention over the next few days, but the longer-term outlook is promising. As for the blog, I hope that I’ll be able to resume posting from the beginning of June. Thank you all for your patience and understanding, and special thanks to those who have taken the time to pass on kind words and good wishes.

The Volcanism Blog took an unannounced break this week because my health took a turn for the worse on 19 July. Things are better now, but I can’t promise a return to full service for a little while yet. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

In the meantime, here’s something to enjoy from Sticky Comics: lil’ volcano.

Update 10 August 2009: I’m better! Back to blogging this week. Thank you to everyone who has left messages and/or sent e-mails with good wishes. Your kind thoughts have been much appreciated.

Catching up… 15 December 2008

Apologies for the recent lack of activity here at The Volcanism Blog: some time-consuming personal matters came up and everything else was put on hold. In particular, apologies to those who have submitted comments and have had to wait for them to be moderated, and to correspondents awaiting a response to e-mails. Sorry for the delay, and I will be catching up with things as quickly as I can over the next couple of days.
