Magnitude 7.0 earthquake hits Haiti 13 January 2010

This isn’t directly related to volcanoes, but I don’t feel able to leave this terrible event unmentioned. A magnitude 7.0 earthquake has hit Haiti: the earthquake was shallow, ~10 km, and seems to have been centred only a few kilometres south-west of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, which has been very severely damaged. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, are feared dead.

Chris Rowan has an excellent post at Highly Allocthonous: Tectonics of the Haitian earthquake.
