Soufrière Hills update for 9-16 October from the MVO 16 October 2009

At the Montserrat Volcano Observatory’s clunky website the latest weekly bulletin on activity at Soufrière Hills volcano is now available, covering 9-16 October.

The bulletin reports that activity has been at a high level this week, with very high seismicity (rockfall signals=1224, long period events=382, volcano tectonic earthquakes=1) and a new lava dome growing since at least 9 October, with the summit of the new dome now around 60 metres above the old dome. Pyroclastic flows have been descending to the west and north-east, and there has been extensive ashfall on the western side of the volcano.

Quick mention: the NASA Earth Observatory has a new image of Soufrière Hills captured on 13 October by the Aqua satellite’s MODIS.

A “strong eruption” (dome collapse?) is reported for late Friday 16 October at Soufrière Hills, which has caused flight cancellations between Puerto Rico and the U.S. This information is from a Spanish language news article at Primera Hora (Puerto Rico):
