Soufrière Hills from space – NASA Earth Observatory images 7 October 2009Posted by admin in activity reports, Caribbean, NASA Earth Observatory, Soufrière Hills.
Soufrière Hills volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat ended 10 months of relative quiet this week with some vigorous eruptions of ash. The NASA Earth Observatory has released the MODIS true-colour satellite image above, which was taken on 6 October and shows distinct ‘puffs’ of ash extending westwards from the volcano. The episodic nature of the plume can be seen even more clearly in this MODIS image captured by the Aqua satellite on 6 October:
[Many thanks to Robert Simmons at the NASA Earth Observatory for these images.]
