Following signs of increasing unrest at Gaua volcano in Vanuatu, a team of volcanic experts has arrived to check what is going on. The volcano is currently at the lowest alert level of one (on a scale of one to five), and an evacuation will be ordered only if the alert level is raised to three.

A local inhabitant quoted in this Radio Australia News story reports that a tour guide and a tourist had to make a quick getaway from the volcano ‘as the ground shook and black smoke and ash filled the air’.
