SI/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report 2-8 September 2009

The Smithsonian Institution/United States Geological Survey Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 2-8 September 2009 is available on the Global Volcanism Program website. The following is a summary and not a substitute for the full report.

New activity: Koryaksky (Russia), San Cristóbal (Nicaragua).

Ongoing activity: Batu Tara (Indonesia), Chaitén (Chile), Dukono (Indonesia), Kilauea (Hawaii, USA), Popocatépetl (Mexico), Rabaul (Papua New Guinea), Sakura-jima (Japan), Shiveluch (Russia), Suwanose-jima (Japan).

Note: a.s.l. = ‘above sea level’.


Koryaksky (Russia). Activity decreased on 27 August and remained low to 4 September. Gas-and-steam plumes rose 3.7 km a.s.l. and drifted in multiple directions, and tremor was detected by the seismic network during 27-28 August and 1 September.

San Cristóbal (Nicaragua). On 6 September an explosion produced an ash plume that reached no higher than 8.5 km a.s.l. and drifted 75 km W. Ashfall was reported in nearby towns.


Batu Tara (Indonesia). During 2-8 September ash plumes rose to 1.5 km a.s.l. and drifted 10-55 km W and NW.

Chaitén (Chile). During 20-31 the lava-dome complex continued to grow, particularly to the W, collapses from unstable slopes generated block-and-ash flows, and gas-and-ash plumes on occasion rose 1.5 km above the lava domes. On 6 September an ash plume reportedly rose to 2.4 km a.s.l. and drifted E, and on 7 September a plume rose to 2.1 km a.s.l. and drifted NE.

Dukono (Indonesia). During 7-8 September ash plumes rose to 2.1 km a.s.l. and drifted 35-75 km E and SE.

Kilauea (Hawaii, USA). Lava continued to flow SE through a lava tube system to the Waikupanaha ocean entry, and thermal anomalies detected in satellite images and through visual observations revealed active surface lava flows in the former Royal Gardens subdivision. The Halema’uma’u crater vent continued to produce a diffuse white plume that drifted mainly SW, degassing and rockfall sounds were occasionally heard near the vent, and incandescence from small openings in the vent floor was visible at night. The sulphur dioxide emission rate at the summit remained elevated: 1,200 tonnes/day on 2 September and 785 tonnes/day on 3 September (2003-2007 average rate was 140 tonnes/day).

Popocatépetl (Mexico). Emissions of steam and gas from contained slight amounts of ash during 2-3 September.

Rabaul (Papua New Guinea). White and grey ash plumes from Tavurvur cone rose 1.5 km above the crater and produced ashfall in and around Rabaul town over 28 August-3 September. Incandescence from the summit crater was occasionally visible at night, incandescent lava fragments were ejected from the crater, and rumbling and roaring noises were heard. On 5 and 8 September ash plumes rose to 2.1-2.4 km a.s.l. and drifted 55-90 km N and NE.

Sakura-jima (Japan). Explosions during 2-8 September produced plumes to 1.2-2.7 km a.s.l. that drifted W, SW, and S.

Shiveluch (Russia). During 28 August-4 September seismic activity was above background levels. A large daily thermal anomaly was detected daily over the lava dome. Seismic data indicated ash plumes possibly rose to 5.2 km a.s.l. and hot avalanches occurred at the lava dome. Gas-and-steam plumes rose to 3 km a.s.l. during 28-29 and 31 August and 1-3 September.

Suwanose-jima (Japan). Explosions were reported 3-7 September, but there are no details of any resulting plumes.
