A joint SERNAGEOMIN/ONEMI overflight was carried out at the Chilean volcano Descabezado Grande on 4 May following the recent reports of possible activity, and ONEMI reported the outcome yesterday. Today there is a new ONEMI bulletin on the situation at Descabezado Grande, as follows:
Following the overflight carried out yesterday by the Regional Director of ONEMI for Maule and a technical team from the Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería at Descabezado Grande volcano, with the objective of verifying the reports of emissions of material on 28 and 29 April, SERNAGEOMIN reports that no evidence has been seen of recent eruptive activity, and neither can landslides be associated with the phenomenon seen in the last days of April. This, however, could be associated with some possible wind activity over the western flank of the volcanoes in this area. Likewise, the presence of fumaroles of water vapour, where were not visible according to the last records of 2006.
The fact that the recently observed activity has been confirmed as fumarolic (perhaps with a little wind involvement) is considered significant enough for SERNAGEOMIN to recommend that CONAF (Corporación Nacional Forestal) carries out continuing visual surveillance of Descabezado Grande, with daily reports to ONEMI’s national early warning centre, Centro Nacional de Alerta Temprana.
