The following two pictures of Llaima volcano in Chile, taken on 11 April 2009, have been provided exclusively to The Volcanism Blog by Werner Keller of POVI, Proyecto Observación Visual Volcán Llaima. These images are copyright Prof. Marco Millar (e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org). The pictures show one of the two lava flows from the western flank of the volcano. The rough surface typical of ʻaʻa type lavas can be seen clearly in the lower image.
Many thanks to Werner Keller and Prof. Marco Millar for these images. More can be found at the POVI website.
Werner Keller reports that the front lobes of the lava flows extruded during Llaima’s eruption of 3-8 April were located from satellite images at 1891, 1921 and 1946 metres above sea level, and that the total extent of the lava flows was 12.5 kilometres.
