The dedicated Llaima-watchers at POVI have added a new dimension to their monitoring of the volcano with the launching of a live seismogram, relaying seismic data on line in near-real-time via the POVI website.
The seismogram shows seismic information for the last two hours, updated every 10 minutes. The data is registered by a seismometer located 18km south-west of the summit of Llaima volcano. After two months of successful test running, the seismometer was able to detect very low frequency earth tremors from Chaitén, some 400km to the south, as well as Llaima’s local seismicity.
This is the first web-accessible public near-real-time seismometer on any active volcano in South America.
