Llaima update 21 February 2008 21 February 2008
Posted by volcanism in Chile, Llaima, activity reports.trackback
Recent bulletins from SERNAGEOMIN report that Llaima is exhibiting continuous degassing and constant low-level tremors interspersed with occasional larger quakes, but that no eruptive activity has been occurring at the main crater, possibly because of a blockage of crusted lava. The lower of the two summits, Pichillaima, has exhibited fumarolic activity. (Latest SERNAGEOMIN bulletin: 18 February 2008, PDF.)
SERNAGEOMIN is maintaining a yellow volcanic alert at Llaima. A bulletin from the Chilean national emergencies office ONEMI released on 19 February confirmed that there had been ‘a significant decline in eruptive activity’ at Llaima, but closures and restrictions remain in place in the area around the volcano and a yellow alert is still in force.
