Alert level raised for Cleveland, Alaska 11 February 2008

The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has increased the level of alert for Cleveland volcano following pilot reports of a 6000-metre eruption plume on Friday 8 February 2008. The aviation colour code has been raised to ‘orange’ and the alert level to ‘watch’. Cleveland is among the most active Aleutian volcanos, with one eruption in 2007 and four in 2006. The lack of a seismic monitoring network for the volcano means that the AVO is unable to track local earthquake activity related to volcanic unrest, relying instead on satellite imagery and visual reports.
