The volcanic island Anatahan, in the central Mariana Islands, began releasing a plume on 30 December 2007. This activity continued into 31 December. A United States Air Force Weather Agency report on the latter date stated that the plume consisted mainly of steam and gas, with little ash content. A satellite picture showing the plume has been published by NASA at the Earth Observatory Natural Hazards site.

An explosive eruption took place at Anatahan in May 2003, the first such historical event; intermittent eruptive activity occurred during 2004-5 and 2006.
